Description: The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization that provides free video tutorials and interactive exercises. The Academy’s declared mission is “changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.”
The lessons were conceived primarily for distance learning but are also suitable for use in the classroom. The tutorials are informal in style and organized for building knowledge one concept or lesson at a time. Many lessons are delivered as electronic blackboard talks by someone with an apparent enthusiasm for the topic.
Khan Academy website users can maintain records of their progress. Through the website, teachers can also monitor the progress of students who are using the site. In pilot experiments, schools are using a concept called “flipping the classroom,” which involves students watching the Khan Academy lectures at home and then using classroom time for exercise and testing. In this model, the teacher’s role is changed from lecturer to tutor and progress monitor.
In other words, Khan Academy is a personalized learning resource for all ages. It offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. It tackles math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. It’s math missions to guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. It also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
Khan Academy is a free tool for parents and teachers. They are working hard to ensure that it empowers coaches of all kinds to better understand what their children or students are up to and how best to help them. See at a glance whether a child or student is struggling or if she hit a streak and is now far ahead of the class. The teacher dashboard provides a summary of class performance as well as detailed student profiles.
Action plan: Since I am an IT teacher and Khan Academy website has courses in computing section. So, I can give primary students (6th grade) an introduction to programming by using this website to make them prepared for programming that they will take in intermediate level. By letting my students to only take an idea about what is programming by watching videos and reading about it from that website. Then make my students to test themselves in Khan Academy website to see if they understand the concept of programming. Me as a teacher I can see their results of the test they done in the website.
But first I will take a whole session to teach my students about how to use this website and what is Khan Academy website. Teaching them this website will be very helpful for them in the future. This website will teach them to be more independent in learning. Also, it will help them understand other courses they are currently taking or will take in schools and university.
